Scheduled Ancient Monuments
Rotherham Unitary Development Plan (UDP)
The Rotherham UDP document dated June 1999 states that there are 35 Scheduled Ancient
Monuments within the Borough which should be protected from inappropriate development.
We have listed the sites below.
English Heritage have a continuing programme of scheduling monuments ("The Monuments Protection Programme") which constantly amends the list of Scheduled Ancient Monuments through additions, deletions or boundary modifications.
One of the sites Blue Mans Bower (Pictured left - © Nikki Mahadevan is located at Whiston and can be found at grid reference SK4389. It is an artifically raised mound surrounded by old water channels which appear to have been connected to the River Rother and Ulley Brook. Historical research shows that the Bower is clearly shown on the Fairbanks Map of 1792 and it was thoroughly excavated in 1939 by Whiting. It is understood that the earliest record dates from 1668 but it not known exactly what its purpose was.
